The cult, repeatedly awarded Arne Jacobsen project for Fritz Hansen, Denmark of the 1950s
A stunning set of Grand Prix chairs designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen. Light and comfortable, with beautiful, warm teachwood. The chairs are solid and strong, no flaws. The bottom of each chair is signed by Fritz Hansen.
The chair was shown at the 11th Triennial in Milan in 1957 – where the project received the Grand Prix, from which it took its name – and then in the same year in Charlottenborg, Copenhagen.
In the first edition (exactly our chairs), the chairs had four separate L -shaped legs, made of laminated platform with a strong strip in cross -section, probably partly to look less solid or less heavy.
The legs imitated the profile of metal legs of other shell chairs, so they were inclined towards the floor, and at the top they were curved, but under the seat they had the shape of a long hammer or hockey stick, and were glued directly to the bottom of the chair. It turned out to be unstable, so the project in the mid -1950s was changed, and the individual legs were replaced with two pieces of bee beech that cross inside. This form is closely related to the wooden leg frame made for Giraffe – dining room chairs, which Jacobsen designed for the Sas Royal Hotel.
A version of the Grand Prix chair with steel legs was also produced, which in the catalogs is marked as the FH3130 model.
